Launching a blog is super-easy today. Unlike a few years ago, you don’t need any technical skills or experience to do it. And despite you have a couple of choices, my recommendation is to go with a self-hosted WordPress blog.
WordPress is the most powerful tool on the market you can get. It’s great for blogging and creating a website with e-shop – and for everything else. The best part? Like I said, to launch a WordPress blog is super-easy. Here’s how you can do it.
1. Decide For A Domain Name
The first and the most important thing when launching a blog is knowing your domain name. Domain name is the URL of your blog. Today it can be a little tricky to find a domain name that’s not registered yet, but it’s not impossible. It takes just creative thinking to come up with one that’s still free. Most importantly, don’t forget that the domain name doesn’t have to match the blog name. For example my blog had a domain name www.hanajaywrites.com yet it was called “Heroes & Happy Endings” for two years.
The domain name can come from various sources. It can be a name of:
- Brand/company – ZeroToBlog.net
- Own name/building a self-brand – HanaJayWrites.com
- Nickname – ALadyInLondon.com
- Theme name – CannelleVanille.com
- A combination of two words – Microsoft.com
- A word changed using a suffix or prefix – Shopify.com
- Playing with letters – Flickr.com, Tumblr.com
Some additional tips:
- Try new domain suffixes rather than just registering .com domain – try .net, .coffee, .me, .guru
- Don’t use hyphens, long names or abbreviations that don’t make any sense
- Don’t use any registered trademarks – it’s illegal!
2. Choose Your Hosting/Domain Provider
I recommend GoDaddy for any Europe/USA and global blogs. WebSupport is great for any Europe based blog. The only advantage to WebSupport is that their hosting has fast data transfer, but you can’t go wrong with GoDaddy either.
They both have great customer support. I’ve been using GoDaddy for about 8 years now and my experience so far has been amazing. Their customer support has helped me to solve problems that they didn’t even cause.
3. Buy A WordPress Hosting
This is the easiest part: get a WordPress Hosting. Both GoDaddy and WebSupport offer relatively similar packages in similar price range. The only differences are what I mentioned in the point 2. Now it’s time to make a choice!
4. Log-In To Your WordPress Account
Once you choose your domain name and select your WordPress Hosting, add them to card and make a payment. You should get an email with details how to log in to your WordPress website in few minutes. All you need to do then is to log in – and then start writing your blog!
Have you already started a WordPress blog? How did you find the set up?
